Fit To Fly Workshop
Transport Canada hosted the first Fit to Fly Workshop in June, 2017 in Gatineau, Quebec. The Workshop increased awareness about mental health and substance abuse, provided information about best practices and programs, and shared practical methods of promoting a healthy workforce.
Fit to Fly featured four separate panels on specific topics surrounding mental health and substance abuse disorders in aviation.
Understanding mental illness and substance abuse disorders
- Understanding mental illness and substance abuse disorders and the stigma attached to them addressed how to help pilots while still keeping them in the cockpit.
Tools, Programs and Best Practices
- Review of the support/assistance programs panellists have in place in their respective organizations and shared lessons learned.
Prevention, Implementation and Measuring Success
- Implementing programs, prevention, best practices and lessons learned to achieve success.
Rights, Regulations and Roles
- How existing legislative and regulatory framework deals with mental health and substance abuse disorders, what rights exist and what additional role the regulator may play. Also addressed was random/mandatory drug and alcohol testing and enforcement.
